I know that git has an command to ignore untracked files, but I worry that doing so might case these files to be inaccessible to the computer when trying to open Edge or something equally bad. I am currently at my wits end and don't know what I should do.

I have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling VS Code in the hope that this might disconnect it from whatever weird connection it made, to no avail. None worked and I haven’t seen any that somehow tied their source control to completely unrelated applications that will not let them wipe data. I’ve already looked through a number of somewhat similar problems on this site relating to having too many changes in the source control, and I’ve tried a number of their solutions out as well. Luckily the files seem to return after opening Edge so I don't think I've permanently deleted any important files for that application. I have (and don't laugh I was getting a little desperate before I realized what it was connected to) tried to disconnect/reconnect git from VS Code (didn't really work), switch branches, switch repos, close the current repo it's fixated on, and manually delete the files in the source code. I realized something was up when all the files didn't delete and trying to access Edge I was given really weird screen appearances. This deleted some files, but most remained. As such I have run 'git clean -f' and 'git reset -hard' on the changes. As I said, this repo is supposed to be attached to a code base that I don't really care about anymore and am not overly concerned with if it gets messed up.

I am operating on a Windows 11 system and the lastest stable version of VS Code ()īefore I realized what the files were connected to (and after multiple other attempts), I did try to simply wipe them clean to start again. Some additional information to try to cover the basics: I've included an image of my VS Code view for reference. I don't know how my Microsoft Edge data was connected to my source control in VS Code and I don't know how to safely detach it so I can go back to using VS Code to create new projects.

The coding project that this repo should be attached to was not modifying my Edge application at all, the only aspect of it that was remotely internet based was when I pushed the code to github. The files are, as far as I can see, all from my user data for Microsoft Edge and are files related to the functioning of the application. However when I tried to do that I found that a large number of the files could not be deleted, so I looked closer at what the files were and were they were located to see if I could manually delete them. I tried just wiping all these files cause originally I thought they were unimportant as the repo the git is supposedly attached to was for a coding project I no longer cared about.

My source control for git in VS Code is showing that I have 10k untracked changes and says that that is too many so it's shut down certain git functionality.
